This week’s round of #T5W allows me to be less shady and more insightful. This book is in oder from least to most disappointing. We (that is you and I) will be taking a look at my most disappointing reads of 2018 and I will be telling you why.
Children of Blood & Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
When I say this one was disappointing, it is not in the sense that I have it two or three monsters. I actually have it four. My issue with this book is similar to the issues parents have with their first born child, I had so much hope for it to Do great things and instead it went off and found love and did some artsy shit. I did not approve of the love interest and I felt like my baby was just forcing itself to become something of wasn’t meant to be.
The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton
If it takes me The first half of the book to convince myself I can finish The book, it simply is not for me. I did not DNF this book though because I had anticipated it so much. While I found the setting and The descriptions beautiful, I spent a ridiculous amount of time wondering if Dhonielle Clayton was hungry for a great part of writing this book, or if this was just her odd to good in New Orleans. Notice how my focus has not yet turned to The plot? That is exactly how the book went…details first, plot last.
An American Marriage by Tayari Jones
I refuse to say too much about this book! I would just like to know who hurt Tayari Jones because someone had to hurt her to write books like these
Adultolescence by Gabbie Hanna
This was a book I had been seeing everywhere. I continued seeing it at Target but thank goodness I did not buy it. Usually, before I read a book, I Google the author of their name is unfamiliar. I did The same with this book and realized the author is a youtuber I am not fond of but I already checked out the book so I may as well just read it. Imagine with me, if you will, a series of memes printed out and put together interspersed with angst term poems written by thirteen-year-old you. Those are the ingredients of this book.
Obsidio by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman
I will do my best to spoil as little as possible here. I love The Illuminae Files trilogy. I was so impressed by the style and the character development of the first two books! I just adore the finale was going to be amazing and my favorite book of the year…it wasn’t. I was so heartbroken. The writing was over the top and the dialogue was corny. The plot was strong but the adventurous pace kept by the first two books was gone in this one. This book broke my heart the most.
These were my most disappointing read of 2018. Please share some of yours or commiserate with me about mine!
Ciao Book Monsters!

I’m gutted to see Obsidio on this list. I loved Illuminae and I currently have the next two lined up. Hopefully I’ll enjoy them better.

Good comment about American Marriage. I’ve tried it. Might try it again.

It’s such a disappointment when you love a series and then there is that ONE book in the series that doesn’t stand up to the other books.

The first three are on my TBR. I wonder if I’ll have a similar opinion!

Sorry to see obisido was such a disappointment to you. It blew my socks off thankfully haha. I’m really happy how it turned out and thought it was a good final installment. Are you going to read Aurora Rising? I’m so excited to read more SciFi from these authors’ combined work ❤
Great post, thanks for sharing.
